FAQ: What is RSS Hub? Is it the same as NewsBreak?
RSS Hub is a version of NewsBreak that has been customized per HTC’s specifications for inclusion on their Windows Mobile devices. There are some minor differences between the interface for NewsBreak and the interface for RSS Hub but the overall functionality is exactly the same.

INFO: NewsBreak won't refresh an updated channel, even manually
If you know a news feed or podcast has been updated but NewsBreak doesn’t download the new items - even manually - or produce an error, the site may be incorrectly reporting that the content hasn’t changed.

INFO: NewsBreak doesn't auto-update or download podcasts when set to update when ActiveSync is connected
Windows Mobile 5.0 has a new connection method which may prevent NewsBreak from detecting that ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center is connected. To fix this, you need to do the following: On your device, go to Start -> Settings -> Connections and look for the “USB to PC” item.

ERROR: System Error 00000027
00000027 should be translated into, “Disk Is Full”, but some devices may not have that error string in the system ROM. You will receive this error when the memory device that holds your channel data runs out of space.

INFO: NewsBreak Tips
Use the New Channel Wizard’s Import from a URL or Search Online option to find new channels you are interested in. On your Smartphone, you can press the 7 key to see detailed progress information in the Channels list during an update.

ERROR: Invalid [something] at the top level of the document
This error might appear during a Search for Channels, or a Headline Refresh. It means that the site that NewsBreak is trying to search or get information from is not available, or that it’s not currently providing search-compatible information.

ERROR: Unspecified Error
NewsBreak 2.x may display an “Unspecified Error” message if a channel contains certain kinds of corrupted data. You will need to contact the feed provider and let them know that their RSS or ATOM news feeds contain “HTML entities that are not properly escaped”.

FAQ: How do I use NewsBreak when my Windows Mobile device is connected to my PC?
Most of the time, this will work automatically, whenever your device is connected. If it doesn’t, check the following. On a Windows Mobile Pocket PC: In ActiveSync 3.8 / Windows Mobile 2003: In ActiveSync on your Windows PC, click on the Options button, then pick the Rules tab.

Windows Mobile Smartphone devices have very customizable home screens, but there is no built-in utility to add or modify what you see on the home screen. There are two ways you go about customizing your home screen.

FAQ: Why don't images always show up in the summaries? Why don't images show up when I'm not connectd?
Images take up a lot more space on your Pocket PC or Smartphone than text. By showing you images only when your Windows Mobile device is connected, NewsBreak uses much less storage space for the summaries.

FAQ: Why don't some of my headlines update?
There are a few reasons why an update might fail. The most likely reason is that the channel can’t be opened by Pocket Internet Explorer. In that case, NewsBreak won’t be able to access the website for current information.

FAQ: How can I tell if a website has a NewsBreak compatible feed?
When you see an orange and white button that looks like: or on a web site, it indicates there is a channel (or several channels) available. Read how to add channels. If you don’t see any buttons like that, try searching the site for the terms RSS, XML or Atom.

FAQ: What feed or channel formats does NewsBreak support?
NewsBreak supports channels that are in these formats: RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom. Formats compatible with these formats (RSS 0.9, 0.91, 0.92, for example) are also supported.

FAQ: How can I use NewsBreak with feeds that require authentication?
Just follow these steps: Add the specific feed to your NewsBreak Channels Go to the Password Tab of the Channel Properties window for that channel Enter the username and password for that feed Note that NewsBreak does not support HTTP Digest Authentication currently.

Not directly from eBay’s site – but there might be third parties that provide this service. Right now, eBay is providing feeds only for General Announcements] http://www2.ebay.com/aw/marketing.shtml, System Announcements http://www2.ebay.com/aw/announce.shtml, and the results of an auction category or search listing (look for the RSS links at the page bottoms).

FAQ: Can I add my own custom icons?
Yes! In NewsBreak 1.1 and later versions, you can add your own icons. Here’s how: On your Windows PC, make a .bmp (bitmap) file using Paint or any other graphics program. Be sure the file is 16 pixels wide by 16 pixels high (32 x 32 for hi-res VGA devices).

FAQ: What do the different icons mean?
In the Channels window, the icons indicate: The headlines in the channel are up to date, as of the last time you synchronized the channel. The channel’s headlines are in process of being updated. One or more of the headlines in the channel match one or more of your keywords.

FAQ: Does NewsBreak require a wireless connection?
No. Although NewsBreak has been designed to work very well with wireless connections such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular data connections, it will also work with ActiveSync’s built-in passthrough capability. Note: in order to view images in article summaries, you need to be actively connected to the internet.

HOWTO: Register / Unlock NewsBreak
To register NewsBreak, visit the About screen and pick the “Register” button (or Menu -> Register on a Smartphone.) When registering your software, make sure of the following when inputting the name and key: You are entering the name and key exactly as they appear in your registration email - the name and key are case-sensitive.

ERROR: System Error 0000000E and 00000070
These two error messages mean your Windows Mobile device has run out of memory. System Error 00000070: Error 00000070 mean that your device is out of “storage memory”, which is where all the data and programs are stored on your device.

System Error C00CE555, or a failure to connect to Syndic8.com for search
This error code indicates that the Syndic8.com service used for channel search in NewsBreak is not available. The error code will not appear in newer versions of NewsBreak. The Syndic8 RSS feed search is no longer available.

ERROR: Error C00CE508 occurred: An invalid character was found in the text context
This error message indicates that NewsBreak is encountering bad, cached data when refreshing a feed. This message should not happen in all NewsBreak versions greater than 1.1.

System Error C00CE56E
This system error indicates that the RSS or ATOM news feed you are trying to refresh contains a text encoding that your PDA cannot understand.

ERROR: Cannot find 'http://....' (or one of its components) when tapping on Read More
This error comes up if Windows Mobile cannot launch the default web browser. This is almost always caused by the default browser being set incorrectly by a third-party web browser such as ACCESS NetFront or Opera.

INFO: Getting Started with NewsBreak
When you first run NewsBreak, it will step you through setting up channels. Since you’re just starting out, selecting channels from the supplied list is probably your best option. Remember that you can always return to the New Channel Wizard at any time to add more channels.

INFO: Installing NewsBreak deleted my channels!
Installing NewsBreak should not wipe out your channels (unless you choose to delete the channel data during the un-install), however it may appear to do so. NewsBreak does not search for channel data when it is installed (Note that under WM5 or newer, NewsBreak is always un-installed in order to do an over-install).

ERROR: System Error C00CE558
System Error C00CE558 means NewsBreak is unable to download channel data because the channel is returning invalid data. Try entering the URL of a RSS news feed into your Pocket Internet Explorer and see if you receive an error (you will receive a blank display if there is no error).

FAQ: How do I change the Font Size in NewsBreak?
You can change the font size only in the Summary View of NewsBreak: Pocket PC: Choose View or Menu->Text Size and select the font size Smartphone: Choose Menu->Text Size and select the font size Unfortunately, no other font adjustments are available at this time.
